General Gowon Stole Half of Central Bamk – UK Parliamentarian Reveals
Nigerian political and military leader who served as the head of state of Nigeria, Yakubu “Jack” Gowon has been identified as one of the Nigerian politicians who stole half of the Central Bank’s money for safekeeping in London.
The general’s name came up after the UK parliament’s sitting on the petition to ‘sanction regime’ which was initiated by Silas Ojo passed the 100,000 mark needed for a petition to be debated by the lawmakers.
General Gowon took power after the 1966 Nigerian counter-coup and was overthrown in the 1975 Nigerian coup d’état. He ruled during the deadly Nigerian Civil War, which resulted in the death of 3 million people, most of whom were civilians.
He was exiled to the United Kingdom where he lived most of his life and became part of the British community. According to the UK parliament, General Gowon is corrupt as he robbed Nigeria of a huge amount of money that could have helped alleviate poverty among other things in Nigeria.
After the findings, members on front and backbenches moved for the motion to sanction General Gowon and other Nigerian government officials whose activities and actions merit condemnation or blame.
The UK Minister of Africa is set to give a final report on the outcome of today’s meeting.
