With the growth of the Nigerian sound, ‘Afrobeats,’ and its relatively global acceptability, one can only hope for the longevity of what is presently being enjoyed as the globe listens to our music.
However, in this article, we are going to look at 4 music collaborations that are sure to shake the Nigerian music industry.
Fireboy and Wizkid
I’m sure fans of Adedamola Adefolahan, also known as Fireboy, are anticipating the heat as he prepares to release his third studio album, following the release of his 2021 hit single Peru.
What wonders will his new album perform on global charts if a freestyle can garner global notice and result in a remix with multiple Grammy award-winning vocalist Ed Sheeran? Fireboy had a fantastic run in 2021. At the 2021 Headies, he took home five awards, including ‘Album of the Year’, ‘Best Pop Album’ and ‘Best R&B Album’. Within three weeks of Peru remix release, it has amassed over 50 million streams globally.
Wizkid’s popular single ‘Essence,’ featuring Tems and Justin Bieber, peaked at Number 9 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2021. His ‘Made in Lagos’ album, which was published on October 29, 2020, reached 1 billion streams in less than ten months.
Olamide, hinted at the collaboration, releasing images of the singer in the studio with Wizkid. ‘Another special one on the album,’ Fireboy said, confirming the collaboration.
ASAKE AND BURNA BOY
Asake has teased the release of his smash single Sungba Remix, which features Grammy-winning Nigerian singer, Burna Boy.
On his Instagram page, the artist shared a clip from the music video.
Asake posted photos of himself and Burna Boy on the shoot of the music video on March 3rd. Asake captioned the post with “God bless odogwu and the squad for pulling up @burnaboygram.” Sungba is the YBNL signee’s second single from his four-track EP Ololade Asake.
MAYORKUN AND OLAMIDE
Mayorkun, the Afro sensation, is ready to release another great collaboration with YBNL boss, Olamide.
Mayorkun released a clip of Olamide’s superb verse from their now-anticipated collaboration single, which comes from the DMW and YBNL labels.
This occurred after a fan brought the topic up. Back in 2020, a Twitter user had requested Olamide and Mayorkun to collaborate on a song.
Following that, the YBNL ace rapper responded to the fan by saying that he has a record with Mayorkun, but he is not sure when the singer will release it.
BUJU AND KIZZ DANIEL
On January 10, 2022, Daniel Benson, better known as Buju, teased a collaboration with hitmaker Kizz Daniel.
Buju (now known as BNXN) had revealed details to the highly anticipated unnamed song he was recording with Kizz Daniel on Twitter. He let his fans know, saying, ‘Kizz Daniel and I were recording, and he paused to sing, “as long as the Hennessy for my cup e never finish, wetin I feel I go talk am finish,” then says “Kilo ma n worry e boboyi?”
It’s no wonder that word of this collaboration has gotten people’s attention. Buju’s collaboration with Ladipoe on the smash tune “Feeling” amassed over 76 million streams worldwide in 2021. Kizz Daniel had a fantastic year in 2021 as well. After its publication, his EP ‘Barnabas’ moved straight to No. 3 on the Apple music rankings.
Individually, these artists did well on the charts in Nigeria and around the world in 2021. Let’s see how successful these partnerships are this year.
