Kashim Shettima is a Borno-born politician who was born on the 2nd of September, 1966 in Shettimari to the family of Alhaji Shettima Mustafa Kuttayibe in Maiduguri, Borno State. He hails from the Kanuri tribe of Borno and is known for his openness to people of all faiths and ethnic groups.
The name of his wife is Nana Shettima, and together, they both have 3 children(1 boy and 2 girls).
Shettima began his education at Lamisula Primary School in Maiduguri and schooled between 1972-1978, before he transferred to the Government Community Secondary School in Biu in 1978 where he did his Secondary school education, and received his West African School Certificate Examination in 1980.
In 1983, he was admitted to the University of Maiduguri for his first-degree program, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Agriculture Economics with a Second-class upper division.
Between 1989-1990, he worked for the Nigerian Agricultural Cooperative Bank in Calabar, Cross River, State as part of his National Youth Service (NYSC), after which he studied agricultural economics at the University of Ibadan from 1990-1991.
Kashim Shettima Career
Shettima started his career as a lecturer at the University of Maiduguri Department of Agricultural Economics from 1991-1993 after he got his Masters’s degree in Ibadan.
Later, he worked as an Agricultural Economist for the Commercial Bank of Africa in Ikeja, Lagos State between 1993-1997. He moved on to become the Deputy Manager, at the African International Bank Limited’s Kaduna Branch from 1997-2001, and as Deputy Manager/Branch Head of the Zenith Bank’s Maiduguri Office from 2001-2005.
He was later appointed as Commissioner of the Borno State Ministry of Finance and Economic Development in the middle of 2007. Subsequently, under his predecessor, Borno Governor Ali Modu Sheriff, he became a Commissioner in the Ministries of Local Governments and Chieftaincy Affairs, Education, Agriculture, and Health.
Engineer Modu Fannami Gubio was chosen as the governorship candidate in the ANPP primaries in January 2011. Gubio was later assassinated by gunmen that year, and Shettima was quickly chosen in a second primary in February 2011 and went on to win the general election on April 26, 2011.
He ran for re-election after his first term as Borno governor and was elected for a second term in April 2015.
During the course of his political career, Shettima worked as Commissioner in 5 ministries between 2007-2011. He served as Commissioner of Local Governments and Chieftaincy in 2008, Education in 2009, Agriculture and Natural Resources in 2010, and finally, the Ministry of Health, where he ran for Governor in 2011 under the now defunct ANPP—All Nigeria People’s Party. During the April 2011 primaries, he got 531,147 votes.
Since resuming office in 2011, he has continued to address issues related to the Boko Haram insurgency in Borno State. In 2013, his government formalized the Civilian JTF, a group of young volunteers, with the approval of the National Security Adviser and the Nigerian Army.
